Non-Folding Treadmill: AFG’s non-folding treadmill is the 7.1AT. The 13.0 AT, also non-folding, has been discontinued – but the 7.1 has the more advanced design. A highlight is the 3.25 CHP. This unit also has wireless heart rate monitoring, an MP3 player port with speakers, and a USB port for uploading new workout programs.
Folding Treadmills: AFG’s folding treadmills have high user weight capacities despite their space-saving design. The folding models currently available from AFG are the 3.1AT and 5.1AT. Both have inclines and can handle speeds up to 12 mph. Compared with the 3.1AT, the 5.1AT has a longer track and more built-in programs.
What We Like:
- Motors: AFG treadmills include powerful motors for the price. They range from 2.75 to 3.5 CHP and can handle shifts in speed without hesitating. When comparing treadmill brands, remember that 2.75 CHP motors are more powerful than 2.75 HP motors.
- Program Variety: AFG provides good program variety in its entry-level treadmills and great variety at the higher end.
- Inclines: All treadmills currently offered by AFG have inclines. These range from 12 to 15 degrees and can have a dramatic impact on your rate of calorie burn.
- Sturdy Decks: Whether folding or non-folding, these units all weigh around 300 pounds and have high weight capacities. The 7.1 in particular features lots of heavy-gauge steel.
- Warranties: Advanced Fitness Group’s included warranties include lifetime protection on frames and motors. You can also expect three to five years of parts coverage and one or two years of labor expenses if anything should go wrong. Extended warranties are available as well (at added cost, of course).
What We Don’t Like:
- Weight: The bulkiness of these treadmills helps ensure that you won’t wobble during workouts. On the other hand, if you frequently switch homes you might resent moving a heavy AFG treadmill around town.
- Cushioning: Cushioning from this brand is adequate for many trainees but isn’t especially high-tech.
Our Verdict:
Great overall value comes with AFG treadmills. There’s something for almost everyone: The full lineup for 2019 offers two track lengths and motors for runners and walkers. This isn’t the brand for people seeking specialty treadmills (e.g., those with extreme inclines or Internet access), but AFG does offer more than enough for most beginners to advanced trainees. We like AFG’s 7.1AT best for its heft, program variety, incline, and USB port for program upgrades.
